A Descent into Madness & Thru-Hiking

Nothing of Particular Consequence (Day 72)

4/27/2023 Thursday

It’s been a low-key kind of day. I’m caught up on all the news, particularly all the legal-political news. Got another night of good sleep and a morning lie-in besides.

But I’m still tired. Wedge and I prepared for a trip to Daleville late morning. We went in to pick up his resupply package, shop at the outfitter, get him a haircut, and do a thorough resupply at the grocery (both for the next few days and for our return to the trail). First, though, we grabbed Mexican food for lunch. There is a robot at the place in Daleville that brings out your food. Is it a timesaver? A ritual humiliation for the staff? Their facial expressions made me think it was more of the latter.

After a few hours shopping, we drove back and I fell asleep. That’s about it. There’ll be more heavy eating tonight. We’re going to prepare a breakfast casserole tonight for tomorrow to have something hot and eggy without too much effort in the morning.

It’s looking likely that Wedge and I will hike tomorrow. Then I’m going to take one last full day to spend here with Ben. Or maybe I’ll take tomorrow off too. Haven’t yet decided. I’ve been doing this (the thru-hiking thing I mean) for long enough that I try to avoid “dragging” myself back to trail before my body is ready. And that includes my brain.

Lately I’m noticing how much more stressful the in-town logistics have been for me than the actual hiking. It’s not all that surprising, but it still surprises me.

  1. What happens if Wedge hikes and you don’t and he gets ahead of you? Cannot blame you for wanting rest and Ben time.

In town logistics are definitely stressful. It’s a big part of why I send packages for Wedge. Standing in a grocery store you don’t know, counting on your fingers trying to piece together enough food for x days, trying to make that food reasonably light and also nutritious, not forget anything, while also being sore and exhausted and town-shocked by all the noise and people just seems like a terrible mental burden. And the possibility of just plain messing up and ending up short on food would stress me out.
When you get a rest day, ideally most of it can be legitimate rest instead of erranding. So, I pack boxes to save him from at least some of that.
I hope you can get well and truly rested and then back on the trail when you’re ready.

    1. “Town shock” is such a good phrase for it!!! Indeed, I look at Wedge’s boxes with great admiration!

Thank you! I have been scouring my local grocery stories for Parmesan Crisps to send in a future box for you but so far no luck. If there is something you’d like me to send along as a treat please let me know!
