Aftermath (Day 142)

7/10/2023 Monday

Hey folks, quick update. I’ve been resting at the Spidle family home today. The trail ahead of me (ahead of where I left off I mean) runs through Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain State Park. Both parks are now closed until further notice due to extensive storm damage. Big roads washed out and stuff. Who knows what the trail looks like—it is likely very damaged in places too.

The trail through Vermont in particular but also farther north may present a challenge in the near and medium term. Flooding there may make it impossible to hike parts of the trail without damaging them. If officials say people shouldn’t hike those miles, I won’t.

I’m gonna be awaiting more information in the next day to figure out next moves. A traditional, complete NoBo hike is now impossible for me, but there are intermediate options which may come close and can provide some of the same benefits.

    Forty years ago while driving east in British Columbia we learned that the Trans-Canada Highway was closed. We had to make a decision: either return to the US to continue eastward or swing north through Jasper National Park and then down the eastern slope of the continental divide. We chose the latter option and Jasper remains to this day the one place I would most like to revisit. The park was amazing. And it only happened because of a road closure.

    There must be some disappointment that the thru hike cannot be achieved but instead of cursing the fates, you are looking for ways to maximize your experience. With that attitude, you will undoubtedly find them.
