A Descent into Madness & Thru-Hiking

AT Gear Tour Pt. 1: Clothing (Day 48)

4/3/2023 Monday

I’m still nauseated but doing much better. It was way easier to eat today. I am so damn glad that the last dose is behind me. Will reached out last night—he’s in the area—and offered to drive me around today. A chance to see a trail friend and get a strip mall haircut! My dream!

I left my stuff at the BnB I’d be staying at tonight and we grabbed ice cream and drove to Abingdon to a Great Clips or similar. There just wasn’t time to get an appointment somewhere better.

Will drives a white Tesla. (Note: dairy products no longer to be consumed before curvy drives). I put my name in at the haircut place and we bummed around Food City next door while we waited. A very itchy cut later—isn’t it possible to angle my head such that the hairs don’t fall directly into my face?—we headed back to Damascus. Will had had to get off trail for medical reasons. He said he got picked up at the red caboose at the edge of town. I talked about how my own thru-hike, which ended sooner than I wanted, and in some disappointment, became a really happy set of memories after I’d grieved for it. We parted. I walked up to my breezy little room above the tiny main street.

My sister Tracy asked about my clothing and laundry habits in the comments. Since I’m just gonna lie around today, why not a tour?

BTW, I’m so glad I took a third rest day. I am still tired, still wiped.

Every last scrap of clothing I have with me. I took this picture naked.
Starting at middle left. The purple thing is a new handkerchief. The black tube with a grey lip is an ankle compression sleeve which I rarely use and may mail home. The strappy affair next to it is an ankle support. The pale gray pantaloons visible at top are rain pants. The blue mass is my sunhat. Just below that is my orange hat and my new gloves. You can see the top of my black hiking shorts, which badly need replacement because they’re almost worn through.
Moving downward. My black hiking shorts. Two pairs underwear (black for hiking, purple in town).
My cool weather running tights and my watch. The watch is powered by motion. People think it’s too nice for hiking, but it’s doing great. With no battery to ever be replaced, it has a good seal on it.
The two navy blue shirts at the front center(ish) are my town shirt (left), and my hiking shirt. They’re similar but I’d never mistake one for the other. Behind those, in very middle of frame, are a folded pair of gray pants. These are jogging pants which serve as my town pants or hiking pants on a cold day.
My knockoff Melanzana. It’s made by Lightheart gear. It’s a micro-grid fleece hoodie and Christ does it look worn. Very snuggly at night or can be a mid layer during the day.
In the upper left hand corner is my buff, a stretchy cloth tube I mostly keep around my neck. You can see my green puffy on the top right. I have two pair of socks right now. The knobby looking ones are my sleep/town socks. The light gray are some new-ish hiking socks. Haven’t tried this brand before.
My lightweight Outdoor Research Helix rain jacket. Look it up online to see what it costs and have a laugh. You can’t argue with less than seven ounces though.

That’s every piece of clothing I’ve got with me. My laundry strategy is to arrive at accommodations and shower and put on my town clothes. Then I wash my hiking clothes. Then if there’s time I’ll do another load to wash my town clothes at the end, but often I’ll just keep those as clean as possible and change back into clean hiking clothes.

End of tour.

Went to the Damascus Diner and had another great meal. Chicken tenders. It’s my microbiome telling me that it misses Ben.

I gotta stop looking at my phone. I’ll be glad to be outdoors if only to cut down on my screen time.

  1. Thanks for that… interesting strategy to have two sets of clothes. Make sense. I bet it feels good to shower and slip into those town clothes after several days. I couldn’t help but picture you naked and taking that pic lol.

  2. You have become an artist in the world of hiking
    For necessity details.
Going to be a make or break method for the many miles ahead!
CNN news will probably be waiting at trail side by the time you reach New Jersey…

About The Blog

I’m Doug Cloud, an inveterate thru-hiker, believer in The One Trail, writer, rhetorician, researcher. This blog catalogs my journeys, particularly my 2023 1500-mile hike on the Appalachian and Colorado Trails. Other journeys may be added. Or not. I go by several mottoes as a thru-hiker:

1. Work the problem.
2. Throw money at the problem.
3. Go for an FKT (funnest known time).
4. ABC (always be thru-hiking).

Subscribe so you don’t miss future journeys! I’m gonna be writing on this thing for, like, 50 years.
