Anyway, enjoy the blog! I’ll add future journeys as I go. I hiked 100 miles on the AT in Georgia and North Carolina in February/March of 2024 to help work on my book. I may add those entries if the time is right–it was a very personal journey. I plan to hike and write and research throughout 2024, and will add posts and pictures as I see fit. Subscribe so you don’t miss out!

  • The Freshness of Secret Springs (Day 81)

The Freshness of Secret Springs (Day 81)

    5/6/2023 Saturday

I climbed up out of Cow Camp Gap shelter area this morning and exchanged some texts with Mom about her trip to REI to help me with my air mattress.

  • 800 Miles (Day 80)

    800 Miles (Day 80)

    5/5/2023 Friday

Things looked slightly brighter in the morning. I was shocked that the patch held! Astounded really.

  • Pills, Patches, Problems (Day 79)

    Pills, Patches, Problems (Day 79)

    5/4/2023 Thursday

As Spotter drove the old hostel van to the bridge to drop me off, I felt glad to be getting back to the trail—a sign that the rest was sufficient. Today was a day of highs and lows.

  • Gadding about in Glasgow (Day 78)

Gadding about in Glasgow (Day 78)

    5/3/2023 Wednesday

I got 6.5 hours. As far as I’m concerned, that’s a trophy-level amount of sleep in a packed hostel. There were some violently blue blueberry pancakes in the morning. Folks were eager to head out.

  • The Bawdy Whispers (Day 77)

    The Bawdy Whispers (Day 77)

    5/2/2023 Tuesday

Last night was a cold one! The temps were within the comfort range of my summer bag, but the winds made it a little dicey. I don’t think a warmer bag would have helped much because that wasn’t the root cause of my chill.

  • There Isn’t Any Cider on Apple Orchard Mountain and Many Other Observations (Day 76)

    5/1/2023 Monday

The shelter grime at Cove Mountain Shelter was less than at nearly any other shelter I’ve been to. The floor wood was still almost honey colored! I mean, it was still gross, just less so. There were only three of us there last night, two in the shelter. I was last out, and loving it.

  • Fruit Punch Oatmeal (Day 75)

    4/30/2023 Sunday

You can mix peach and strawberry instant oatmeal, if you want to. There was one packet of each in a basket in the kitchen—the real sugary kind. I needed something easy. The mixture has a fruit-punch vibe to it that I dig, being the sophisticate that I am. I paired it with perfectly cooked toast dripping in butter. Just a dash of salt, too.

  • Don’t Let It Break Your Heart (Day 74)

    4/29/2023 Saturday

I love Daleville, but it’s time for a new adventure. The trail out of a town is always a little bit scummy. More trash, more ticks (common in wildlife-urban interface), iffier water, and road noise for several miles. But how lovely to anticipate the views from Taylor Mountain Overlook, our 15-mile endpoint for the day.

  • Gender Reveals Gone Wrong and Shenandoah Dreams (Day 73)

    4/28/2023 Friday

Ben is sitting beside me as I write this. He’s watching clips of “gender reveal parties gone wrong” online. He’s silent (watching on phone) but occasionally bursts into laughter.

  • Nothing of Particular Consequence (Day 72)

    4/27/2023 Thursday

It’s been a low-key kind of day. I’m caught up on all the news, particularly all the legal-political news. Got another night of good sleep and a morning lie-in besides.

About The Blog

I’m Doug Cloud, an inveterate thru-hiker, believer in The One Trail, writer, rhetorician, researcher. This blog catalogs my journeys, particularly my 2023 1500-mile hike on the Appalachian and Colorado Trails. Other journeys may be added. Or not. I go by several mottoes as a thru-hiker:

1. Work the problem.
2. Throw money at the problem.
3. Go for an FKT (funnest known time).
4. ABC (always be thru-hiking).

Subscribe so you don’t miss future journeys! I’m gonna be writing on this thing for, like, 50 years.
