A Descent into Madness & Thru-Hiking

Colorado Trail Update #1

I’m back in Colorado and resting at home. It’s been a lovely few days with Ben, who’d expected to wait another two months to see me. Preparations for my Colorado Trail Flip Finale continue apace!

Mom and I packed a resupply box and mailed it to Molas campground before I left Ohio. I took three suitcases with me, one with clothes, one with gear, and one full of all the leftover supplies. Now that I’m home, Zoey has been coaching me on my heat tolerance. She suggests that when you feel hot you should walk over to the shade, lie down, and wait for a human to bring the car around.

My most pressing issue right now is transportation. I’ve gotta get to a (relatively) remote trailhead in the Gunnison area along CO-114. I have a ride in two weeks, but I might go bonkers waiting around here that long. I’m working the problem.

It’s been a whirlwind with the rain and leaving the trail and two plane trips and all the self-doubt that comes with making a major change to a planned thru hike.

About The Blog

I’m Doug Cloud, an inveterate thru-hiker, believer in The One Trail, writer, rhetorician, researcher. This blog catalogs my journeys, particularly my 2023 1500-mile hike on the Appalachian and Colorado Trails. Other journeys may be added. Or not. I go by several mottoes as a thru-hiker:

1. Work the problem.
2. Throw money at the problem.
3. Go for an FKT (funnest known time).
4. ABC (always be thru-hiking).

Subscribe so you don’t miss future journeys! I’m gonna be writing on this thing for, like, 50 years.
