Still Waiting Out the Rain (Day 129)

6/27/2023 Tuesday

I waited until the morning to look at the forecast and decide what to do. If the rain is being measured in inches, and I can avoid it, I will. So I will.

Apollo, Rooster and I watched the weather last night from the porch and enjoyed some scintillating yet leisurely conversation. It isn’t hard to lure me into talking politics.

I just bought Tim Miller’s new book and I’m looking forward to reading it. He’s a married gay man about my age who’s doing good intellectual work in public. It’s kind of nice to see a concrete example of what that even looks like. Indeed, it looks a bit handsome, but only with short hair.

Ok, enough about my nerd crush (and regular crush) on Tim Miller. Nope, that’s not enough. Let’s stop to reflect for a second on the fact that I’m crushing on the guy who ran Jen Bush’s 2016 campaign. That guy.

Fell asleep again mid morning. Rooster and Apollo took me on a quick trip to town for some sandwiches. Apollo has a super cute little underbite—it’s hardly noticeable but gives him more personality. The skies are dark but we’ve not yet had much rain that I’ve seen (granted I haven’t been looking out any windows very often).

Trip and I caught up by phone this afternoon. Then I spent the rest of the evening resting and eating and futzing with gear. There was thunder and lightning and a few short periods of rain loud enough to be heard even back where my bed is. Where I am.

919 miles of trail remain.

An information placard above the Lehigh River that I’ve been meaning to read. Now you can read it too. Download it and zoom in.

  1. Sounds like a nice break. Are you back at it tomorrow? Have you figured out average mileage you need to finish before you go back to school? No pressure, just curious.

About The Blog

I’m Doug Cloud, an inveterate thru-hiker, believer in The One Trail, writer, rhetorician, researcher. This blog catalogs my journeys, particularly my 2023 1500-mile hike on the Appalachian and Colorado Trails. Other journeys may be added. Or not. I go by several mottoes as a thru-hiker:

1. Work the problem.
2. Throw money at the problem.
3. Go for an FKT (funnest known time).
4. ABC (always be thru-hiking).

Subscribe so you don’t miss future journeys! I’m gonna be writing on this thing for, like, 50 years.
